Resource 6

Geographical Association
Community cohesion and the prevention of violent extremism
A resource for teachers to use in the classroom

Resource title
Global Dimension - Learning activities
Source: http://www.geography.org.uk/projects/globaldimension/learningactivities/#2200
Outline
The main aim of this Global Dimension resource is to show how the Geography Key Stage 3 Programme of Study can be transformed to support the work of a school in promoting community cohesion. This is done through the use of the eight global dimension concepts (developed by the DfES) which help to encourage 'thinking geographically' via a variety of themes that run alongside and support much of the work done in geography:
  1. Citizenship
  2. Iterdependence
  3. Social justice
  4. Sustainable development
  5. Conflict resolution
  6. Values and perceptions
  7. Diversity
  8. Human rights
There is a large amount of supporting material for teachers within this resource. A simple Venn diagram demonstrates how planning can be done and Venn diagrams have been produced for each of the eight themes listed above. Most of the learning activities utilise an approach developed by the Geographical Association's GeoVisions team and the sequence used in this resource effectively describes an 'education for conversation'.

The ideas for classroom practice outlined in the resource can be adapted as required to the needs of the school. Some sequences can be accomplished within a single lesson, while others will require longer. Full versions of each of the Learning Activities are shown in the accompanying book, while further resources and examples of classroom practice are made available online.
