National Drama Drama

Community cohesion and the prevention of violent extremism
A resource for teachers to use in the classroom

Resource title
Lorry
Source: See attached Word document Teaching Materials and Strategies
Outline
These teaching materials and strategies offer 3 poems and a dramatic monologue as stimulus, all of which can be used as starting points for a collective whole group drama on the theme of migration and cultural diversity.

The materials will help to guide teachers through different drama strategies, which provide students opportunities to share imagined experience and reflect on the reasons why people undertake great hardship and danger to build new lives in other lands. These resources engage students with political, social and economic issues but are deliberately ambiguous in terms of geographical and cultural settings thus could be adapted for specific 'real-life' contexts.

Through using imagined and non-specific national boundaries and cultures, this work can help students to develop understandings of the migrant experience and reflect on the ways in which existing communities respond to new arrivals.

Suggested drama strategies include :
  • teacher-in-role
  • collective role
  • image making
  • thought-tracking
  • devising and improvisation
The teaching materials and strategies also outline follow-up activities that can be pursued across other subject areas including English, the Arts and ICT.
